Sugar industry of ‘Northern Region’ of India is spread across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Punjab and together contributes nearly 40% sugar in the national basket. Besides, it also produces significant amounts of alcohol and power in the country. The industry provides employment to large numbers of skilled & unskilled workers, and also supports livelihoods of the farming community. Owing to climatic conditions, productivity of sugarcane and sugar, disparity in prices of raw material & finished goods, geography of the region, and inconsistent policies, the industry faces innumerable challenges in carrying out its business and competing with its counterparts in the western and southern regions.
North Indian Sugarcane & Sugar Technologists’ Association (NISSTA), which is a non-governmental organization, has come into effect to ensure well-being of the sugar industry & professionals and facilitating in resolution of the region specific issues of the sugar sector.NISSTA has been built on the principles of close-coordination, transparency and a forward-looking approach in all of its endeavours. It strives to solve the issues that its members address in the most efficient way possible, largely by consultation with leading industry professionals and the executive council of the association.
